Android 2.2 vs. iOS 4 (JavaScript Performance)

Froyo iOS 4 FI

Google’s Android 2.2 OS (Froyo) has brought some significant performance benchmarks to the table. This performance boast is brought to us by a new just-in-time compiler which was introduced in the Android Dalvik environment.  The browser appears to have been seriously optimized making it a definite front runner in the mobile arena.

Ars Technica had this to say about the review they conducted:

“In our recent review of Android 2.2, we conducted some tests on the Nexus One to measure the extent of the JavaScript performance improvements. SunSpider and V8 benchmarks show that JavaScript execution in Froyo’s Web browser is almost three times faster than in the previous version of the platform.”

They compared their finding of the two browsers only to discover that the Android performed significantly faster in terms of JavaScript execution than the iPhone 4. The results were that the Android device (Nexus One) was two to three times faster in their SunSider and V8 test beds.

Oh Froyo how I love thee…thoughts?

Droid Incredible Delayed Again

DIDelay83

Wow, yet another Droid Incredible delay!  This time it is pushed back to sometime in August less than a week ago it was set to be shipping 7/28.

Darn you Samsung for hogging up all the AMOLED screens for your Galaxy lineup…let’s hope HTC reevaluates its screen supplier for their next front runner device.

They have been playing this catch up game from its late April release and haven’t been able to get caught up since.  This is a huge blow to HTC considering the Droid Incredible has well some incredible specs and feature set. Plus it is due to receive the OTA Froyo 2.2 update by years end. I guess Verizon is going to keep distributing those $25 gift cards to customer’s waiting to receive their order.

Reports have been generating about Verizon offering to cancel Droid Incredible orders for Droid X units starting July 15th as an option.  This may be a no brainer for a lot of frustrated customers considering the Droid X is due to receive the Froyo 2.2 update sometime in August. What would you do? Chime in with your comments and let us know.

Froyo 2.2 By Christmas Says HTC

HTC

It’s been made known that HTC will bless its 2010 Smartphones to Android 2.2 Froyo, but the burning question is when?

Rumor has it that the HTC Desire could get Froyo in August, but other Smartphones like the Legend, Wildfire, Incredible and Evo 4G may not be as fortunate.

Eric Lin, global PR and online community manager at HTC, expressed to Pocket-lint that he has faith that the company “would be done with Froyo updates before Christmas.”

Lin gave his explanation and reasoning to what the holdup was by issuing the following statement:

“It takes time to port all of our applications over to Froyo and then make sure that it is running well on each of our devices. That’s not like a one week kind of project. We need to make sure that our applications are taking advantage of the Froyo features. To make sure that they’re all running properly on the OS now that it’s a new version. And then to make sure that it’s running on our hardware as well as we expect”.

Lin also stated that Android Gingerbread could come out in the first quarter of 2011. We should assume that he is right considering he does have an advantage.
